If you have been in church services or been a believer for any amount of time, you may have heard the phrase, “The Great Commission.” It can be very easy to complicate this mission, but the directions are simple: Spread the good news. In Matthew 28:16-20, Jesus urges his apostles to go out and make disciples. The word “commission” means to fulfill a particular purpose. It is an instruction, a mandate.
The Great Commission is a calling from Jesus, directed to anyone who believes in Him, to spread the gospel and bring others to Christ. When we think of this, do we think of someone standing out on the street corner with a sign about Jesus? Do we think of a pastor in a church or a mission overseas? These could certainly be ways to spread the good news, but this doesn’t mean it is not a command for you and me as well.
The Great Commission isn’t a one-time act. It isn’t for certain more “qualified” people, and it isn’t a suggestion. Anyone who follows Jesus is called to create disciples, followers, and be an example to those around them, drawing them closer to His Word, and His people by being intentional and making Jesus central in their lives.
Here are a few ways we can do this:
Memorize Scripture: By memorizing scripture, we “write it on our hearts”, as Proverbs 7:1-3 says, and we keep it in our thoughts and our actions. It is much easier to live out and share something with others, whether in your actions or words when you feel both comfortable and connected to the message.
Serve: Find a way to serve others in your church, your community, your job, and even in your own home. Acts of service done with love, humbly putting others' needs before our own, can be a great way to show people the love of Jesus, while also working on our own hearts.
Relationships: In order to share the news, we have to have others to share it with. And, to create a lasting discipleship relationship and help foster that seed of faith planted in others, we have to be engaged in deep, and meaningful relationships. Maybe you have a neighbor that you can walk with each week or a parent on your child’s soccer team that you ask to go for a coffee?
It doesn’t have to be big, or extravagant. In fact, most of the time, discovering how to better point to Jesus, one step at a time, in our small day-to-day moments will make the biggest difference of all. The Great Commission is for you and for me. After all, why would we want to hide away and keep all of this goodness to ourselves?!
